Please, please, please stop using passkeys for encrypting user data

Because users lose their passkeys all the time, and may not understand that their data has been irreversibly encrypted using them and can no longer be recovered.

Tim Cappalli:

To the wider identity industry: please stop promoting and using passkeys to encrypt user data. I’m begging you. Let them be great, phishing-resistant authentication credentials.

Oof, yeah this relates back to “please assume every user has two and a half passkeys at all times”. It’s still fascinating and ugly how many websites still only support “enroll A passkey” workflows and balk at multi-passkey. The number of “single ecosystem” users that only use iPhone+macOS are the minority. Everybody else generally has at least two ecosystems in their house. (Even Android+Chrome on Windows user is still weirdly fragmented and going to find multi-passkey easier.)

Source: I run a tiny hobby site that only supports Passkey login. I’m glad it is an intentionally small site because troubleshooting user issues is wild. Average number of passkeys by email last I ran numbers was about 1.75 and I think it’s still too low, partly because “give me a link I can enroll another device” was a feature I only recently prioritized. Windows 11’s bluetooth flow is still too confusing for average users and I kept hoping to find a good transactional email vendor for hobby projects, but transactional email is so expensive for just passkey recovery/enrollment mail.

The toughest part of the is trying to figure out which Ws are pronounced like Vs. Bet it’s a wild tongue twister between the switch ups.

As a Dutch guy with a German partner: Dutch is a W, the German kind of depends on which regional accent you're going for. The real subtlety would be in the almost-but-not-quite-nonexistent differences in the way "nkle"/"nkel" is pronounced acrossed the languages

Electric vs Gas

An idling gas engine may be annoyingly loud, but that's the price you pay for having WAY less torque available at a standstill.

Electric motors would be good if not for the tons of expensive, inefficient, flammable, fragile, degrading to uselessness within 10 years batteries you have to drag around. Electric motors with Fuel Cells might make it actually feasible for someone beyond the rich. Though, I think in the short term series hybrids with small batteries might work out better for those who aren't rich.

Can't one just swap out standardized rechargeable batteries for most portable electric motor appliances that have replaced 2 cycle engines these days? I think the only problem currently is with electric vehicles...

I'm mainly referring to electric vehicles. The smaller portable electric motors are actually in a lot better shape, though their batteries are still pretty expensive, usually $100ish each, but that's still a far cry from the $20k-$27.5k that electric car batteries cost, and how they usually wear out in under 10 years.

Translating Latin demonology manuals with GPT-4 and Claude

UC Santa Cruz history professor Benjamin Breen puts LLMs to work on historical texts. They do an impressive job of translating flaky OCRd text from 1599 Latin and 1707 Portuguese.

I’m mostly sure this the premise to a 90s cyber-horror movie or five and also a tossed side plot from a Laundry Files novel for being too unbelievable in fiction.
